Improving the performance of a thermoelectric water cooler for an existing reagent carousel

For higher ambient temperatures and high humidity the additional cooling necessary due to condensation required additional cooling capacity.

Customer Requirements

The bottom plate of the customer carousel is water cooled and the water chilling is done in a water-to-air thermoelectric cooling unit. The task was to increase the cooling capacity within given parameters for space, power supply, fan and water cooler. The parameters that could be changed were number and type of peltier modules, internal thermal resistances of the assembly and heat sink profile.

Our solution

An analysis showed that the original idea of utilizing stronger peltier modules was not possible as the bottle neck was the heat sinking capacity on the hot side of the peltier modules. With computer simulation the performance was optimized by designing a customized heat sink profile and selecting suitable peltier modules. During laboratory investigations the insulation between hot and cold parts was improved and a total increase of 30% of the cooling capacity was achieved.
