Most of the system manufacturers in the datacom and telecom arena do not produce their own transceievers (GBIC, SFP, SFP+, XFP, XENPAK, X2). They rather purchase them from third party vendors and sell them under their own lable for a dear price.

The EEPROM of the transceivers among others contains the vendor identification. Most manufacturers' network equipment reads the EEPROM data and permits the "own" transceivers but block "unknown" ones.
