Pilot production line for bidirectional OLED microdisplays in interactive data eyeglasses and future integrated OLED-on-Silicon opto-sensors

The possibility to control data with one’s eyes and without using hands or speech fascinates a broad number of potential users. The developers of the eyeglasses received already a wide range of requests from different areas of life and work.

In collaboration with partners from various disciplines such as medicine, psychology and industry, Fraunhofer COMEDD currently aims to transfer this revolutionary technology into applicable products. The aim is to develop customer- and application-specific OLED microdisplays with suitable colors, appropriate resolution of the display and camera function within the microchip.

The new line extension will provide bidirectional OLED microdisplays in interactive data eyeglasses and future integrated OLED-on-Silicon opto-sensors for the industry, medicine or biotechnology branches. The OLED Deposition & Encapsulation Unit is configured as cluster system to process full color OLED device as well as mono and area color device for R&D and Pilot production.

CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS

Fraunhofer COMEDD is partner for the technology and process development for organic light emitting diodes (OLED) for the application in lighting systems, microdisplays, in sensorics and organic photovoltaic systems as well as for the development of specific devices.
On an existing thin film deposition tool originally supplied by Korean company two additional organic thin film layer deposition chamber had to be integrated.
The Comedd Cluster tool forms in its current stage a unique combination of various thin film technologies which allows for novel material combination and its process verification on the level of pilot production scale.

AMS Technologies provided support and assistance to SNU Precision and Fraunhofer COMEDD to put the new coating system into operation, specifically dedicated to OLED-on-Silicon microdisplays.
