Strain sensor based on polymer optical fibers for industrial sensing applications
POF based strain sensor for industrial sensing applications
Unique strain sensing solution based on Polymer Optical Fibers (POF)
A new and unique strain sensing solution based on Polymer Optical Fibers (POF) provides designers with a low-cost sensing solution that is lightweight, immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS) and does not require electrical current at the sensing point.

The unique, cost-effective POF based strain sensor solution is based on a patented Optical Phase Interrogation (OPI) technique developed by Avago Technologies. It enables readily available POF to be used as a high-precision strain sensor on par with current Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) based strain sensors. The strain sensor is now available from AMS Technologies across Europe.

Applications: Structural Health Monitoring, strain measurement for aeronautics, ...
The sensor is the right solution for a broad range of applications including
  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) in a variety of structures
  • industrial weight measurements
  • strain measurement for aeronautics.
Advantages compared to conventional strain sensing technologies
The strain sensor using POF is a worthy alternative to conventional electrical and optical strain sensing technologies. Strain gauge and accelerometer solutions require power to be brought to the sensor, which limits where the sensors can be applied, whereas the POF based sensor does not require electrical current at sensing point. Optical strain measurement systems, such as Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG), have been commercially available for a number of years, but Bragg based solutions are significantly more expensive and complex to install.
